Dutch media have made their stance on Virgil van Dijk crystal clear following the Netherlands’ comfortable 4-0 victory over Malta on Thursday night. While Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo stole the spotlight with two penalties — alongside goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Memphis Depay — it was the captain’s display at the back that came under heavy scrutiny.

With Ronald Koeman’s side firmly on course for next summer’s World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, the Oranje are shaping up as dark horses thanks to their strong core and experience. However, Van Dijk’s latest performance has raised some eyebrows, sparking talk of possible defensive frailties from a player once considered unshakable.
