The Liverpool player tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain on Thursday morning. According to a report from zamora24horas, the 28-year-old and his brother, fellow footballer Andre, were involved in a fatal collision in Zamora, northwestern Spain.
His passing comes just weeks after he married his childhood sweetheart, and devastating final posts on social media have surfaced following the news of his death.
Local authorities reported, “Two young individuals died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria).” The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station responded to the incident, noting that the vehicle caught fire, spreading flames to the surrounding vegetation. The victims were 28 and 26 years old. Rest in peace.
Liverpool also released a statement following the loss of their star forward. The announcement of Jota’s passing was made in the Houses of Parliament, where Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Lisa Nandy paid tribute to him. She expressed, “We just received the heartbreaking news moments ago before we entered the chamber that he tragically lost his life at just 28 years of age. The whole house is heartbroken, and I want to extend our sympathies to his friends and family on behalf of everyone here.”
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in the summer of 2020, making 182 appearances and scoring 65 goals across all competitions. Liverpool’s statement read, “Liverpool Football Club is devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. We have been informed that the 28-year-old has died following a road traffic accident in Spain alongside his brother, Andre. At this time, Liverpool FC will not be making further comments and requests that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they cope with this unimaginable loss.
