“Ethan Nwaneri Shatters Arsenal Record with Unstoppable Wondergoal Against Preston—A Historic Feat That May Never Be Matched”

The young talent has shown exceptional skill this season.

Arsenal’s rising star Ethan Nwaneri set a new milestone with a brilliant goal in the Carabao Cup match against Preston.

Mikel Arteta fielded a fairly strong lineup for the Lancashire trip, with players like William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli, and Mikel Merino among the starters.

However, Nwaneri, 17, stole the spotlight at Deepdale by netting Arsenal’s second goal at 33 minutes with a stunning left-footed, 30-yard strike, leaving Preston’s keeper Freddie Woodman helpless.

Beyond the wondergoal, this strike made Nwaneri the youngest Arsenal player—at 17 years and 223 days—to score in his first two starts, following his brace in the 5-1 victory over Bolton on September 26.

After that Bolton match, Arteta praised Nwaneri’s growth.

“He’s improving daily,” he told Arsenal.com.

“The fans really respect him. He’s playing with freedom and confidence, making decisions that show he’s ready for this level. His performance today was strong, and I’m pleased with his progress.”

Despite his youth, this isn’t Nwaneri’s first record. In September 2022, he became the youngest Premier League player at 15 years and 181 days, surpassing Harvey Elliott’s record. His debut against Brentford also made him Arsenal’s youngest player in any competition, breaking Cesc Fabregas’ record of 16 years and 177 days.

This season, the Hale End graduate has also made four Premier League appearances against Liverpool, Bournemouth, Tottenham, and Leicester City, and he’s looked completely at home on the pitch.

With Arsenal competing across the Champions League, Premier League, League Cup, and FA Cup, there will likely be more chances for promising talents like Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Ahead of the Preston tie, Arteta shared his thoughts on Lewis-Skelly’s potential, noting that he had “earned the right to play.”

“He plays with complete belief and commitment and has the qualities we want for his position, whether out wide or centrally,” Arteta said.

“Defensively, he’s very strong. When a player shows this readiness, their academy background doesn’t matter—we have to give them opportunities, and he’s earned his.”
