Chelsea were so bad last season that this season’s slight improvement has felt better than it should. Let’s face it, we’re still stuck in mid table, and we still look miles off where we should be when we play good teams.

We’re managing to sneak by against the lowest teams in the league rather than beating them comfortably, and there’s no signs of a team really coming together yet. Plenty of people are willing to just blame injuries and the youth of the squad, but as the months pass more and more pundits are claiming that the manager is at least partly at fault.

Shay Given knows the Premier League inside out, and it was interesting to hear his takes on 5 Live’s Monday Night Club yesterday:

“There is question marks over him. Is he the right man to lead Chelsea forward? I think he is but at the same time he should be getting more out of them players in midfield, you could put them down on paper and say it’s the dream team, but they are not hitting the heights of previous clubs.”

Much of that is hard to disagree with. We’re being patient and waiting to see what Pochettino can produce week after week, but there’s no denying we want to see a big step up in this second half of the season if we’re to be convinced he’s the right man long term.
