FA Makes Big Call on Michael Oliver as Arne Slot Receives Extended Ban for Merseyside Derby Drama
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a touchline suspension ahead of the club’s crucial Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
The FA has also made a key decision regarding referee Michael Oliver following the controversy surrounding Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton. Slot received a two-match ban for his confrontation with Oliver after the final whistle, ruling him out for the upcoming fixtures against Newcastle and Southampton. His assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, has also been suspended for two matches, leaving Johnny Heitinga likely to take charge from the touchline.
Despite the fallout from the heated Merseyside derby, Oliver has been appointed to officiate this weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round tie between Crystal Palace and Millwall. He will be joined by assistants James Mainwaring and Steven Meredith, with Nick Hopton handling VAR, supported by Mark Scholes and Michael Salisbury. Simon Hooper has been assigned as the fourth official for the fixture.
Addressing the disciplinary action against Slot and Hulshoff, the FA released an official statement confirming that both Liverpool and Everton had been sanctioned for failing to control their players and staff after the match. Slot was found guilty of improper conduct and using abusive language toward match officials, resulting in a two-match ban and a £70,000 fine. Hulshoff received the same suspension along with a £7,000 fine.
Despite the bans, Slot and Hulshoff will return in time for Liverpool’s highly anticipated Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley on March 16.
