Fans believe Arne Slot took a subtle swipe at Liverpool’s owners, FSG, following the team’s Champions League exit to PSG at Anfield.
Liverpool were eliminated on penalties after their last-16 tie ended 1-1 on aggregate over two legs and extra time. PSG secured a 1-0 win in the second leg, with Ousmane Dembélé scoring in the 12th minute. In the shootout, Gianluigi Donnarumma denied both Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones, sealing Liverpool’s elimination.
After the match, Slot refrained from heavily criticizing his players, insisting they had done enough to win. When asked if PSG were favorites for the competition, he disagreed and pointed to their financial strength.
He commented, “Over 90 minutes, I don’t think we deserved to lose. Over 180 minutes, maybe extra time was fair. In extra time, PSG were slightly better. Usually, you face teams like this in the semi-final or final, but we had to meet PSG—one of the richest clubs in the world—at this stage.”
Liverpool made only two permanent signings last summer, leading to growing criticism of FSG’s limited spending. Federico Chiesa was their only immediate addition, arriving from Juventus for £12.5 million but remaining an unused substitute. Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed for £25 million from Valencia but was loaned back for the entire 2024/25 season.
Many fans took Slot’s comments as a veiled criticism of FSG’s frugal approach. One tweeted, “Love that he called FSG out for being cheap—this is simply a quality difference.” Another noted, “He’s been mentioning money a lot lately… hmm.” A third added, “He’s sending a message to the owners to spend.” And a fourth remarked, “So are we, but we don’t spend.”
