John Dempsey, the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland defender, has sadly passed away at 78. As a central figure in Chelsea’s defense, Dempsey played a vital role in the club’s FA Cup victory in 1970 and their European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1971. In that memorable European final replay against Real Madrid, he scored the opening goal, which he described fondly on Chelsea’s website: “Charlie Cooke took the corner, and the goalkeeper punched it. It was about 12 to 15 yards out, and I hit it on the volley. Most times it would go anywhere, but thankfully, it flew into the roof of the net—an unforgettable feeling. The groundsman told me it was the best goal he’d ever seen on that pitch.”
Growing up in Kilburn, Dempsey joined Chelsea from Fulham in the 1968-69 season for £70,000, scoring seven goals in 207 appearances for the club. He was integral to Chelsea’s FA Cup win over Leeds United, who they defeated 2-1 in a replay at Old Trafford. Teammate Peter Osgood famously referred to Dempsey and his fellow defenders as “the four assassins at the back.”
Following their European success in 1971, Dempsey helped Chelsea reach the League Cup final in 1972, finishing as runners-up. He remained with the club until 1978, when he moved to the Philadelphia Fury in the North American Soccer League. Reuniting with Osgood, Dempsey’s skill earned him the NASL’s Defender of the Year award, even outshining Franz Beckenbauer.
In addition to his 19 caps for Ireland, Dempsey later dedicated himself to working as a carer in a center for individuals with learning difficulties.
