Greek defender George Baldock was tragically found dead in the pool at his Athens residence on Wednesday evening, according to multiple media reports. The 31-year-old’s cause of death remains unknown, with police launching an investigation into the circumstances.
It’s reported that his wife had tried calling him earlier, and after he failed to respond for several hours, she grew concerned. Later, she received the devastating news.
Baldock had recently signed a three-year deal with Greek club Panathinaikos after leaving Sheffield United, where he spent seven years.
He began his professional career with MK Dons in the 2010/11 season, before making a significant move to Sheffield United in 2017, while the club was still in the Championship. Two years later, he helped the team secure promotion to the Premier League, finishing second with 89 points, just five shy of the top spot.
Baldock made 83 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists as a right-back. He was a key player for Sheffield United, amassing over 200 league appearances.
His strong performances earned him a call-up to the Greek national team, for which he featured in 12 matches. However, he was not included in the squad for the upcoming Nations League match against England, scheduled for Thursday.
The Greece Super League released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Baldock’s passing, extending their condolences to his family and loved ones.
Baldock’s final match was on Sunday against Olympiacos Piraeus, where he started and played 75 minutes before being substituted. The game ended in a goalless draw.
