A former Liverpool midfielder has announced his retirement from football, concluding a remarkable two-decade career that saw him rise from academy hopeful to a winner of both the Champions League and Premier League.
Adam Lallana shared the news on Instagram, expressing, “As I end my playing career, I do so with immense gratitude and pride.”
The 36-year-old made 178 appearances for Liverpool after joining from Southampton in 2014, scoring 22 goals and providing 21 assists across all competitions. He celebrated four major trophies at Anfield, including the 2019 Champions League and the 2019/20 Premier League, before having spells with Brighton and returning to Southampton, where he fittingly concluded his playing days.
“Southampton… the place where it all began, and where it fittingly ends,” he noted. “I owe everything to this club.”
However, it was at Liverpool that the England international, who earned 34 caps for his country, truly flourished. “Liverpool… the opportunity to represent one of the greatest clubs in the world and achieve some of the biggest accolades in the sport.”
Lallana also expressed his appreciation for Brighton, calling it “home to some of the happiest years of my life” and praising the club for its strong community ties and modern management.
At Brighton, he developed a close relationship with Alexis Mac Allister, which likely influenced Mac Allister’s decision to move to Anfield a couple of years ago.
Reflecting on his journey, Lallana conveyed heartfelt thanks to those who supported him along the way: “To everyone who made this journey special… the managers, coaches, teammates, and of course the fans — thank you.”
He also acknowledged his family, stating: “My wife Emily, our wonderful sons, my mum, dad, and sister — thank you for your unwavering support throughout.”
“I’m proud of my playing career and have no regrets,” he continued. “I embrace both the highs and lows, as they’ve shaped who I am.”
In the closing weeks of his career, Lallana was quietly involved in an unexpected twist when Pep Guardiola sought his insight on Pep Lijnders before appointing him as his new assistant at Manchester City.
