Giorgi Mamardashvili Shares Heartfelt Goodbye to Valencia Ahead of Liverpool Transfer
Giorgi Mamardashvili is preparing for an emotional farewell at Valencia, with Sunday’s home fixture against Athletic Bilbao marking his final appearance at Mestalla. The 24-year-old goalkeeper is set to finalize his move to Liverpool after the season wraps up on May 25.
A £29 million deal between Valencia and Liverpool was agreed upon last year, with Mamardashvili joining to compete with Alisson Becker for the starting role at Anfield. The Georgian international has impressed this season, keeping eight clean sheets in 32 La Liga matches, playing a key role in the team’s improvement under new manager Carlos Corberan.
Ahead of the match, Mamardashvili posted on Instagram: “It’s always a pleasure to defend this club. Tomorrow, I will play my final game at home with this shirt. I wait for you all at Mestalla. Upward always.”
While Liverpool view Mamardashvili as a strong addition to their squad, Spanish outlet Relevo reports he may pursue a loan move to another Premier League side if he struggles to unseat Alisson.
Despite the competition, Liverpool goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel remains confident Alisson will stay first-choice next season. “The decision to sign this young goalkeeper was made over a year ago, probably with the future in mind,” Taffarel told ESPN Brasil. “But Alisson is still playing at an elite level, and with his experience and motivation, replacing him won’t be easy.”
Alisson, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabian clubs in the past, is reportedly committed to staying at Liverpool. “He’s had big offers,” Taffarel added, “but he keeps saying he wants to continue writing his story here. He feels he owes a lot to this club.”
