Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, is thoroughly enjoying his time in North London and has expressed to the media that his move to England has been a dream come true.
Vicario stepped out of his comfort zone to join Spurs. Despite making a few mistakes, he has quickly established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the league, winning over Spurs fans with his passionate performances.
He transferred to the Lilywhites from Serie A club Empoli in the summer of 2023 and hasn’t looked back since. Moving from Italy to England has allowed Vicario to achieve a significant life goal.
In an interview with Vivo Azzurro TV (via TuttoMercatoWeb), he said, “My career began at the bottom, starting from the inter-regional level. I took a path that allowed me to gradually climb the ranks to Serie A.
“The Premier League transfer was the realization of a dream: I chose to embrace a different life and cultural challenge, leaving my comfort zone behind.”
His international career is also flourishing. Since relocating to England, Vicario has seen his status with the Italian national team rise. While it remains a challenge to displace his international captain, Gianluigi Donnarumma, as the first-choice keeper, Vicario has been more frequently involved in the national squad.
He was part of Italy’s Euro 2024 squad and has impressed during his appearances for the Azzurri. Reflecting on his role as one of the top Italian goalkeepers, he mentioned his childhood idol.
He added, “As a kid, I would go to bed wearing Buffon’s jersey, and having him with us every day is an indescribable emotion.
“Playing for the national team is a childhood dream; it’s amazing to travel across Europe and the world representing Italy. I hope to remain part of this group and participate in the 2026 World Cup.”
Vicario’s passion for the club is evident; he even remarked that he would have signed his contract with Spurs in blood if necessary and would have walked to London to make the deal happen (Guardian).
