UEFA regulations could see Eze miss Arsenal’s Champions League games ahead of Crystal Palace’s European clash.

Arsenal have pulled off a dramatic transfer coup by beating north London rivals Tottenham to the signing of Eberechi Eze.

Spurs had initially dropped their pursuit of the Crystal Palace playmaker earlier in the summer but reignited their interest after James Maddison suffered a season-ending ACL injury in early August. During that period, Arsenal—who had been leading the race for Eze—appeared to back away from negotiations.

However, once Kai Havertz picked up a knee injury on Wednesday, the Gunners quickly returned to the market and moved decisively for Eze. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has already given the deal his trademark “Here We Go,” with Arsenal now on the verge of sealing the move.

Despite the looming transfer, Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that Eze will still feature in Thursday’s UEFA Conference League playoff against Fredrikstad. “Many were surprised when [Eze] and Marc [Guehi] played against Chelsea, and most will be surprised they play again tomorrow,” Glasner told The Standard. “They are committed, they give 100%, and he’s under contract—it’s his job.”

That sparked concerns among Arsenal fans that Eze could be ineligible for the Champions League. But UEFA’s rules state that a player involved in qualifying or playoff matches can still be registered for the group stage of another European competition. Since Palace’s fixture with Fredrikstad is only a playoff, Eze will remain eligible to feature for Arsenal in the Champions League.

Having already secured automatic qualification for the group stage by finishing second in the Premier League, the Gunners will have no problem registering their new signing.

Eze now looks set to join an already busy summer of arrivals at the Emirates, with Arsenal having added Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke as they mount another title challenge.
