Manchester United are reportedly preparing to replace Erik ten Hag with Thomas Tuchel, as the Dutchman faces growing pressure following a poor start to the season. According to reports, Tuchel has already outlined his vision for the club during a secret meeting with officials, including minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The Manchester Evening News revealed on Monday that Tuchel is being considered as Ten Hag’s successor after United’s recent struggles, including a 3-0 loss to Tottenham. Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa did little to ease concerns, as United now sit 14th in the Premier League with only eight points from seven games—their worst start since 1990.
Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich earlier this year, reportedly met with United chiefs in Monaco, presenting a detailed plan for how he would manage the team. One key aspect of his proposal was the potential to revitalize Mason Mount’s role at Old Trafford.
Although Tuchel previously declined the role over concerns about United’s transfer strategy and power structure, it’s unclear whether his stance has changed. The club is said to be keen on him due to his availability, with Gareth Southgate and Ruud van Nistelrooy also considered as potential candidates. However, sources indicate Southgate was never a serious option during the summer and is unlikely to be in the future.
