Scott McTominay is off to a fantastic start in Italy.
The Italian press have already coined a nickname for McTominay after his impressive performances for Napoli following his transfer from Manchester United.
After spending 22 years at Old Trafford, it was surprising to see McTominay leave United this summer, especially given his significance under Erik ten Hag.
On August 30th, McTominay signed with Napoli for a reported £25.4 million.
Post-transfer, McTominay shared that his ultimate goal in life is to find happiness, and living in Italy as a footballer certainly seems to be a great way to achieve that.
“My biggest dream as a person is to be happy,” McTominay said through Napoli.
“Happiness is the best thing in life, and that is the only thing I concentrate on: try to be happy, with my family, my friends, my girlfriend… when you have a smile on your face, you play better at football too,” he added.
So far, the 27-year-old appears to be thriving in his new environment, netting two goals and providing an assist in his first five games for Napoli.
But it’s not just his direct goal contributions that have impressed—the midfielder’s overall performances have captured attention, and the Italian media have already given him a nickname.
Thanks to his standout displays, reporters have dubbed McTominay ‘Antonio Conte’s Jolly.’ The term might not mean much to the midfielder unless he’s already familiar with Italian culture, but ‘Jolly’ in Italy refers to the Joker card, known as the ‘Jolly Joker’ when decks were first imported from the UK in the 1800s.
In essence, the nickname paints McTominay as Napoli’s savior—a wildcard player with the ability to turn a losing situation into a winning one.
Initially, McTominay made his first two appearances as a substitute, but after scoring less than a minute into his second appearance, he has become a fixture in the starting lineup.
