Liverpool’s only signing of the summer, Federico Chiesa, has had a rocky start, failing to meet expectations so far.
The Italian media, especially Tuttosport, have voiced their opinions on Chiesa’s underwhelming beginning at Liverpool after just three appearances.
Arne Slot’s first transfer window at Anfield was quiet, with Liverpool missing out on top target Martin Zubimendi. However, they signed Italy international Chiesa late in the window for £10 million after Juventus deemed him surplus to requirements.
Given Chiesa’s talent and the modest fee, many believed Liverpool had secured a bargain. But the former Fiorentina star has struggled to make an impact, featuring in just three matches across all competitions, the most recent being a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over West Ham.
Injuries have plagued Chiesa’s brief stint at Liverpool, and manager Arne Slot bluntly expressed his disappointment ahead of the RB Leipzig clash. Tuttosport reported that Slot’s remarks suggested he was treating Chiesa “like a student who needs a lot of repetition.”
The Italian media outlet, however, supported Slot’s assessment, acknowledging the differences in intensity between Italian and English football. Slot highlighted Chiesa’s missed pre-season and the challenge of adjusting to the higher intensity of the Premier League, noting that the team is currently operating at a different level.
Tuttosport agreed, noting that Italian football is less intense and more tactically fragmented, which may explain Chiesa’s struggles to adapt.
With competition from Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah, and Luis Diaz for a place on the wing, reports have emerged suggesting that Chiesa could return to Italy on loan, with Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Roma reportedly interested.
