As the Reds prepare to face RB Leipzig in the Champions League tomorrow, Federico Chiesa will once again be absent from the lineup due to injury. The Italy international, who joined from Juventus this summer, has managed just three appearances so far.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the match (via @DaveOCKOP on X), Slot provided an open and honest assessment of Chiesa’s situation.

“Injuries are always tricky to assess after a few days,” the Dutch coach said. “With Federico, it’s clearer—he missed pre-season and is adjusting to a league with higher intensity than Serie A. That puts him behind the rest of the squad.”

Slot added that Chiesa’s absence from pre-season has made it challenging to get him up to speed. “It’s tough when a player misses such an important period of preparation. It’s a big disappointment for him to be in and out, and we feel for him. But he’s signed a long-term contract.”

Liverpool acquired Chiesa for just £12.5m in what was seen as a shrewd piece of business. However, concerns over his injury history have proven valid, and his early days at Anfield have not gone as planned.

Slot also explained the medical team’s cautious approach to the Italian’s recovery, reminding everyone that the season is still young and Liverpool has a long way to go in their pursuit of success on multiple fronts.

While there’s clear disappointment, fans hope it won’t be long before Chiesa can showcase his abilities in a Red shirt.
