Playing in an unusual left-back role, the Liverpool defender was key in helping England recover from their shock 2-1 defeat to Greece earlier in the week. Alexander-Arnold was involved in England’s first two goals, including a precision pass that led to Grealish scoring and later sealing the win with a stunning free-kick in the 74th minute.

After the match, Grealish revealed the playful bet. “I joked with Trent before the free-kick, ‘score this and I’ll give you £500,’ and he put it right in the top corner,” Grealish said (via BBC Sport).

Despite criticism from Roy Keane for his defensive work, interim boss Lee Carsley was full of praise for Alexander-Arnold, noting that his quality shone through in the unfamiliar position. “We can get caught up in discussions about his best position, but as long as he’s effective, it’s great to have him,” Carsley said (via Sky Sports).

England now faces two crucial matches in their UEFA Nations League campaign, with must-win games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland ahead.
