Although James Maddison was substituted at half-time during Tottenham’s 4-1 victory over West Ham, he achieved something no other Premier League player could this weekend.

Tactical Substitution for Maddison

With the score tied 1-1 at the break, Maddison was replaced by Pape Matar Sarr, sparking speculation about a potential injury. However, it was later clarified that manager Ange Postecoglou opted for a tactical adjustment. Sarr was brought on to strengthen Tottenham’s midfield defensively, allowing Dejan Kulusevski to play further forward. The switch paid off, as Spurs dominated the second half.

But Maddison’s influence in the first half shouldn’t be overlooked. Despite his early exit, the data shows just how creative he was during his 45 minutes on the field.

Maddison Tops Spurs’ Stats

According to Squawka’s analysis of this weekend’s Premier League matches, Maddison created more chances than any other player, notching up five in just one half. He surpassed the likes of Harry Winks, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Marcus Rashford, who each managed four chances created.

Even more impressively, Maddison matched a long-standing Spurs record. He became only the second player in the club’s history, after Darren Anderton in 2003, to create five or more chances in a Premier League game while playing 45 minutes or less.

Postecoglou’s Midfield Versatility

Some have suggested that Maddison’s substitution indicates he should be benched, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Maddison remains vital to Tottenham’s midfield, and his impressive stats from the West Ham match prove it. The success of this tactical switch highlights Tottenham’s midfield depth and flexibility, allowing Postecoglou to make adjustments based on the needs of the game, which can only be seen as a positive.
