Jamie Carragher backed Steven Gerrard’s opinion when asked to name the worst Liverpool teammate, describing the player as the “biggest waste of money in history.”

Steven Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, is being tipped for a return to football management as he emerges as the leading contender for a high-profile role.

The 44-year-old, widely regarded as one of England’s greatest ever players, spent most of his 18-year playing career at Liverpool before ending his time on the pitch with LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer. Since retiring in 2016, Gerrard has taken up coaching roles with clubs including Rangers, Aston Villa, and Saudi side Al Ettifaq.

Gerrard has been out of work since parting ways with Al Ettifaq in January, but recent reports suggest he is now the top choice to rejoin Rangers, the club he managed from 2018 to 2021.

According to The Daily Record, bookmakers now see Gerrard as the most likely candidate to take over at Ibrox. However, it’s understood he’s asked for time to discuss the potential move with his family, who have been based in Bahrain since his move to Saudi Arabia in 2023.

Other names linked to the vacancy include Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti. On Thursday, Coral listed Gerrard at 1/3 odds to land the job, with Ancelotti following at 2/1 and Martin at 9/2. Marco Rose (16/1), Danny Rohl, and Frank Lampard (both 25/1) are considered less likely choices.

Coral spokesperson John Hill commented, “Gerrard’s previous success with Rangers makes him the clear favourite to return, and our odds indicate a close contest between him and Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti.”
