Jamie Carragher discusses reasons why Liverpool should reconsider a transfer for Alexander Isak.

Jamie Carragher has advised Liverpool against spending £150 million on Alexander Isak, expressing concerns that the club’s summer spending appears uncoordinated. The Premier League champions have already invested over £250 million in new players, a figure that could rise to nearly £400 million if they pursue Isak with a higher offer.

While many Liverpool fans are excited about the potential addition of the Newcastle striker to a forward line featuring Hugo Ekitike, a £79 million signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, Carragher remains skeptical despite his admiration for Isak.

On “The Overlap Fan Debate” by Sky Bet, Carragher stated, “Isak would be a fantastic signing, but as a fan, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150 million on him. Bringing in another striker (Ekitike) feels off, as if it lacks a clear plan.”

He pointed out that Isak appeared frustrated when both Arsenal and Liverpool signed strikers, suggesting the situation feels chaotic. Carragher emphasized that it doesn’t seem like Liverpool’s strategy to buy one striker for £80 million and then pursue another for £120 million.

In addition to Ekitike, Liverpool has also acquired Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. With Isak reportedly wanting to move to Anfield, another significant signing seems imminent.

Contrasting Carragher’s perspective, Paul Scholes believes Isak would be a bold move for Liverpool. Scholes acknowledged the odd planning surrounding Ekitike but noted that after spending little last summer, there is now available budget. He argued that Liverpool’s ambition is to be the best in Europe, and signing Isak, considered one of the top center forwards, would align with that goal.

When asked about the 2025-26 Premier League winner, Scholes confidently stated he couldn’t overlook Liverpool but mentioned the need for depth in defense to avoid issues with potential injuries.
