Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has recommended that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta consider benching one of his players after their recent performance against Newcastle.
Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday prompted Cole to reassess his Premier League title prediction, now expressing doubts about the Gunners’ championship prospects.
Initially backing Arsenal to secure their first league title since 2004, Cole has reconsidered due to recent form, as Arsenal has managed only one point from their last three games. In their latest setback, Alexander Isak’s 12th-minute header from Antony Gordon’s cross gave Newcastle a deserved win. Though Arsenal began the season strongly, these recent results have raised concerns, with Cole suggesting tactical adjustments for the upcoming games against Inter Milan and Chelsea.
“Newcastle were absolutely brilliant today,” Cole told TNT Sports. “They were great on the ball and off the ball. This could be a season-defining result for Newcastle. A lot of us tipped Arsenal for the league, myself included, but now I’m starting to have second thoughts after what I saw.”
Cole specifically advised Arteta to make changes to the lineup, suggesting Leandro Trossard be dropped after a subpar performance against Newcastle. “Trossard wasn’t at his best today,” Cole noted. “He’s a fantastic player, but I’m sure Mikel will make adjustments. They have a crucial week ahead, with a trip to Milan followed by a match against a resurgent Chelsea.”
When asked if his title prediction had changed, Cole admitted, “Yes, I’ve had a change of heart. I’m not completely reversing my pick yet, but I am rethinking it.”
Arsenal faces a tough schedule, starting with a Champions League clash against Inter Milan midweek, followed by a key London derby against Chelsea, where they’ll be looking to regain momentum in the title race.
