Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee featured for the Netherlands in their 1-1 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina on Tuesday evening, but his performance drew sharp criticism from Dutch media.

Since joining United from Bologna for £36.5 million in July 2024, the 23-year-old has struggled to find form. Despite scoring on his debut in a 1-0 win over Fulham in August, Zirkzee has yet to add another goal and has mostly been limited to appearances off the bench.

Called up to Ronald Koeman’s squad for Nations League fixtures against Hungary and Bosnia, Zirkzee did not play in the first match but started in Zenica on Tuesday. Dutch media were harsh in their evaluations. AD rated him 5/10, the lowest on the pitch, stating: “As a second striker, his moment came before halftime, but he finished far from convincingly.” Meanwhile, De Telegraaf awarded him a 6/10, highlighting his missed chance and lack of impact: “For Zirkzee, this was a moment to prove himself, but his tame effort revealed his biggest weakness.”

Koeman declined to comment on individual performances, but reports noted Zirkzee struggled to influence the game despite showing some ability to hold up play. Critics pointed out his wandering movements and inability to capitalize on key opportunities.

With his form under scrutiny, Zirkzee will be eager to impress Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, as the team faces Ipswich Town on Sunday, November 24.
