In an unexpected turn, AC Milan traveled to the Santiago Bernabeu and defeated Real Madrid 3-1, making it the second consecutive loss for Los Blancos, following their 4-0 El Clasico loss to Barcelona last month.
A clip now circulating online captures Bellingham’s reaction to being subbed off mid-match, revealing a lot about his current sentiments towards the club and Ancelotti.
Just moments after Tijjani Reijnders scored Milan’s third goal in the 73rd minute, sealing the game, Ancelotti made the call to bring Bellingham off, a decision that visibly frustrated the young English star.
In the now-viral clip, the 21-year-old can be seen angrily kicking a water bottle as he left the pitch, a sign of his disappointment with the team’s performance.
Despite a stellar first season with Los Blancos, Bellingham has struggled in the 2023/24 campaign, and Tuesday night was no exception.
The midfielder was not involved in Madrid’s only goal and failed to register a single shot on target during the match.
In 11 appearances across competitions this season, Bellingham has yet to score a goal for Madrid, managing only three assists.
This is a stark contrast to his incredible record last season, where he netted 23 goals and provided 13 assists across 42 appearances in all competitions.
His performance last season earned him third place in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, behind teammate Vinicius Junior, who scored for Madrid on Tuesday, and Manchester City’s Rodri.
Despite this season’s struggles, Ancelotti has expressed confidence in Bellingham, stating that he remains pleased with the midfielder’s contributions.
Ahead of Madrid’s previous Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, Ancelotti said: “We’re satisfied with his work; I’m very satisfied. He’s always present, competes, fights, and sacrifices for the team.
“It’s true he hasn’t scored as he did last year, but the real surprise was his incredible goal tally last season, which nobody expected.”
