Jurgen Klopp fires at chelsea owners over Mauricio Pochettino exit
Jurgen Klopp seemed to aim a subtle dig at Chelsea’s decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino as he appeared in front of a sellout crowd at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on Tuesday night.
Pochettino left the Blues by mutual consent earlier this month despite securing European football and a sixth-place finish in his one season at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine had endured a difficult start to life in west London, but seven wins from the season’s final 10 Premier League games was enough for him to the end season on a high.
However, Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca is now set to be appointed as Chelsea’s sixth manager since a Todd Boehly-led consortium took over the club in May 2022.
Klopp, meanwhile, couldn’t hide his bemusement at the Blues’ decision to part ways with Pochettino as he appeared at a farewell event with Liverpool supporters on Tuesday night and insisted that he wouldn’t have survived a year of such a ruthless regime.

“We should be really happy that we have these owners and not guys who bought London clubs and other stuff,” said Klopp, discussing Fenway Sports Group credentials as Liverpool owners. “I wouldn’t have survived a year at Liverpool (with them in charge). ‘Great development but not good enough, sack him!’ A year later: ‘Sack him’. Then finally they play football where people think they might be back and they sack the manager anyway.”
Liverpool’s owners, FSG, have operated sensibly since acquiring the club in October 2010. Klopp was just the fourth manager of their reign – following on from Roy Hodgson, Sir Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers – and was in position for nearly nine years as the Reds won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Super Cup, Club World Cup and Community Shield under his guidance.
Following Klopp’s departure, Liverpool have appointed Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, whose tenure as Reds boss will officially begin on June 1.
