Ex-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opened up about his thoughts on Sergio Ramos during a conversation with Toni Kroos.
Klopp, 57, departed from Liverpool after the 2023-24 season following nine successful years. Since then, he’s been linked to several managerial roles but recently took on a position as head of global soccer at Red Bull Group, drawing criticism from fans of his former club, Mainz.
Mainz supporters expressed their disappointment by displaying banners during a Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig on October 19, one reading, “Have you forgotten everything we made you become?” Another banner simply questioned, “Are you crazy?” Klopp has defended his choice.
Although Klopp has no plans to return to management in the near future, his achievements place him among the game’s legends. During his Liverpool tenure, he clashed with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for domestic glory, with Real Madrid often his adversary in European contests.
In a recent chat, Klopp discussed the rivalry, particularly recalling Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final and their 1-0 victory in the 2022 final.
During the 2018 match, Madrid’s Ramos brought down Liverpool’s star, Mohamed Salah, in a controversial move that saw Salah injured and withdrawn. Klopp has yet to forgive Ramos, stating, “If you’re not from Real Madrid, you see him as ruthless and brutal.”
Klopp continued, “Watching football since childhood, I’ve seen a lot from Ramos. In the situation with Salah, someone should have assessed it better, especially with VAR. Mo wouldn’t necessarily get hurt every time in that scenario; he was just unlucky.”
Kroos, Ramos’ former teammate, admitted the incident was “brutal.” Klopp questioned, “Is Mr. Sergio Ramos really a good guy? He’s not my favorite player. I’ll never understand that mentality, nor could I accept it with my players.”
Kroos later defended Ramos, explaining that he was a “good teammate.”
