Liverpool are said to be showing serious interest in signing Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, according to recent reports.

The Uruguayan international has been a vital part of the Barcelona squad, but there’s some speculation that the Catalan giants might consider letting him go for the right price.

With Virgil van Dijk’s contract expiring this summer, Liverpool may see Araujo as a crucial addition to their defence. Reports from Fichajes suggest the Reds are willing to splash out €100 million for the 25-year-old, who could be a long-term successor to Van Dijk.

Araujo appears to fit Liverpool’s system well, and while the club would ideally retain Van Dijk, there’s a possibility that both could feature together in the starting lineup next season.

It’s clear Liverpool need a strong transfer window to regroup. Following recent disappointments — including losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle, a Champions League exit at the hands of PSG, and a 3-2 Premier League defeat to Fulham — the team has shown vulnerability despite still being title contenders.

Araujo would be a statement signing, but the hefty price tag could limit Liverpool’s ability to strengthen in other areas. Arne Slot may also need to address the right-back position with Trent Alexander-Arnold nearing the end of his contract, and possibly look for a new forward to offer more consistency than Darwin Nunez.
