Romelu Lukaku agrees new contract with Chelsea as part of Roma loan deal

Matt Law at the Telegraph yesterday had the full scoop on the details of Romelu Lukaku’s move to Roma on loan.

His salary has been hacked down to £6m, with Chelsea not paying a penny of it, and Roma will pay £5m to Chelsea to take him for the season. He will play with Jose Mourinho, who managed him during a mixed spell at Manchester United.

It appears Lukaku has also a agreed to lower his Chelsea salary should he return, in exchange for a £37m “release clause” – basically a buy option for Roma which any other team could theoretically activate too.

It’s all a mess really, and shows how desperate the club are to get him off the books. Still, if it leads to a permanent move for that £37m next summer, it has done its job.

The latest catastrophic chapter in the tome of Chelsea strikers could almost be finished.
