Liverpool announce major transfer update nearly four hours after Monday night deadline
Late on Monday evening, Liverpool officially announced the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, with the transfer set to be completed in the summer.
Reports had emerged a day earlier that the Reds had agreed a £60 million package with the Ligue 1 side for the defender. Jacquet is believed to have opted for Arne Slot’s side over Chelsea, feeling his chances of regular first-team football would be stronger at Anfield.
After completing his medical on Merseyside earlier in the day, there was no confirmation from Liverpool by the 7pm Premier League transfer deadline. However, confirmation finally arrived later that night.
Liverpool confirm Jeremy Jacquet signing
At 10:30pm on Monday, Liverpool announced the deal via their official website and social media platforms. According to LiverpoolFC.com, the club has reached an agreement with Stade Rennais for the 20-year-old defender, who will join ahead of the 2026/27 season, subject to international clearance and a work permit.
The statement added that Jacquet will remain in Ligue 1 for the rest of the current campaign before completing his move to Anfield in the summer on a long-term contract.
Jacquet deal offers positives from deadline day
While many Liverpool supporters were understandably disappointed that no defender was brought in to immediately strengthen Slot’s squad—where options are currently thin—the confirmation of Jacquet’s future arrival at least provided a positive takeaway from deadline day.
The Daily Mail reported that Liverpool’s long-standing interest in the youngster intensified over the weekend once it became clear that Jacquet favoured a move to Merseyside over Chelsea. The Standard also claimed that the Blues were ultimately unwilling to match Liverpool’s offer.
Jacquet is expected to arrive at Anfield with a strong reputation in France. Commentator Matt Spiro, who has watched him closely, described the defender as a “man mountain” who looks “tailor-made for the Premier League.”
While fans will have to wait until later in the year to see Jacquet in action, the immediate hope is that Slot’s side can avoid further defensive injuries, with no reinforcements arriving during the January window. Still, the late-night confirmation ensured the window didn’t end on a complete anticlimax.
