Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk recently offered a glimpse into his future as discussions continue over a potential contract extension with the club. Since his transfer from Southampton in December 2017, Van Dijk has become one of the Premier League’s top defenders.
While his current contract expires in the summer, the 33-year-old hinted at what might come next in an interview on the “Rio Ferdinand Presents” podcast, leaving open the possibility of moving into management.
“I said no, but given how demanding this life is and the sacrifices my family makes, I don’t see it happening right away… but never say never,” Van Dijk explained.
He also expressed his passion for youth development, frequently visiting the Liverpool Academy to watch young players. Although he’s ruled out a role as a pundit, Van Dijk is drawn to coaching, recalling the impact first-team players had on him as a youth at Willem II. He added, “I’d love to stay involved in football in some capacity in the future, but the specifics are still far off.”
