In July, Sky Sports issued an apology to Nottingham Forest after Gary Neville referred to the club’s statement as “like a mafia-gang” during a live broadcast of Super Sunday on April 21, following a 2-0 defeat to Everton.
Sky stated that they had “discussed with Gary the language used and its potential to cause offense” and confirmed that he had agreed to avoid similar terms in future broadcasts.
More recently, Neville found himself facing criticism again, this time from Liverpool, which was reportedly considering action against Sky Sports over his remarks about Arne Slot during a live segment.
An article from The Telegraph highlighted Liverpool’s search for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, noting that there had only been an “initial polite inquiry” from sporting director Richard Hughes to Xabi Alonso’s agent, Inaki Ibanez, regarding the former Reds midfielder’s return. In contrast, Arne Slot was the only candidate formally offered the Liverpool job, which he accepted with a contract lasting until June 2027.
However, Neville claimed on Sky that Slot was actually “third choice” behind Alonso and Ruben Amorim, who is set to become Manchester United’s new boss on November 11. This statement was inaccurate, prompting Liverpool to briefly consider demanding a public retraction.
Slot has revitalized Liverpool, who currently sit at the top of the Premier League, leading by two points after ten games. He is preparing to face Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday night at Anfield and has called for his team to perform at their best.
“Xabi was a top-class player and is proving to be just as capable as a manager,” Slot remarked in his program notes. “I want to welcome him back to Anfield, and I know the fans share this sentiment. However, we understand that there will be no room for sentimentality on his part, so we must adopt the same approach.
