Many Liverpool supporters believe it’s time to have a serious discussion about his form after his disappointing display in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea.
Liverpool went into the game desperate to end a poor run of results, having suffered back-to-back losses to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray over the previous week. But their sluggish start continued, as Moises Caicedo fired Chelsea ahead in the 14th minute, beating stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was making his first Premier League start.
The Reds did manage to respond when Alexander Isak’s clever touch teed up Cody Gakpo to level things in the 63rd minute. However, their hopes of salvaging a point were dashed deep into stoppage time when 18-year-old Brazilian talent Estevao smashed home Marc Cucurella’s assist to snatch a 2-1 win for the Blues.
It was far from a classic Liverpool performance, with stars like Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konaté struggling to make an impact in west London. But many fans directed their frustration at another player who has looked off the pace in recent weeks — Alexis Mac Allister.
The Argentine midfielder was well below his usual standards at Stamford Bridge, prompting some supporters to suggest his form has “declined” early in the 2025/26 season. Caicedo, who scored Chelsea’s opener, appeared to dominate their midfield battle, and fans on social media didn’t hold back in their criticism of the World Cup winner.
One fan wrote: “Mac Allister, I love you, but we need to move him on and get a proper ball-winner. He’s hurting us every game.”
Another added: “Mac Allister just isn’t anywhere near last season’s level — it’s becoming worrying.”
A third observed: “Mac Allister presses high, gets bypassed, and leaves space exposed. We saw the same issue last year against Newcastle — it’s a recurring problem.”
A fourth commented: “Mac Allister has slowed down so many of our counters. He needs a rest — he’s nowhere near his best.”
And a fifth fan remarked: “His passing this season has been awful — even the simple ones are going astray.”
Mac Allister was substituted for Wataru Endo in the 87th minute and likely won’t have complained about coming off after another difficult outing.
Liverpool now turn their focus to a crucial clash against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, October 19, after the international break.
