Liverpool needs to sell their 21-year-old defender this summer to adhere to Premier League regulations, according to reports.
Liverpool is anticipated to part ways with 21-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay this summer due to Premier League registration rules that create a significant squad dilemma.
The Scottish defender, who has only made two senior appearances since joining from Aberdeen in 2022, is likely to be let go because he does not qualify as homegrown.
According to onefootball.com, if Ramsay had completed the season with his former loan club Wigan Athletic instead of Kilmarnock, he would have met the requirement of being registered with an FA-affiliated club for three seasons before turning 21, thus qualifying as homegrown.
However, his decision to join Kilmarnock on loan has affected his eligibility, compounded by a series of injuries that have sidelined him for 46 matches over the past three seasons.
Premier League squad regulations leave Liverpool with few options. The club submitted a reduced 21-man squad last season, including only six homegrown players. With Trent Alexander-Arnold now at Real Madrid, that number has decreased to five, increasing the pressure on Arne Slot and the recruitment team to release non-homegrown players and promote others.
The report points out that several Under-21 players will no longer be exempt from youth rules next season, including Ramsay, which creates a logjam in the squad. His lack of availability and non-homegrown status make him a likely candidate for transfer.
Even as a backup to new signing Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley, Ramsay cannot justify his place in the squad.
Liverpool has already added Florian Wirtz this summer, bringing in another non-homegrown player. If further signings like Alexander Isak occur, space must be created, and unfortunately for Ramsay, the situation does not favor him.
A potential exit would provide Liverpool with more flexibility in the market, allowing the club to continue its rebuilding efforts under their Premier League-winning head coach.
