Liverpool have reportedly identified Alvaro Carreras as a potential long-term replacement for Andy Robertson.
The Reds were looking to strengthen their defense during the summer transfer window, with a focus on a left-sided centre-back. However, instead of pursuing that route, Richard Hughes and his recruitment team opted for Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join from Valencia in 2025.
Names like Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio and Sevilla’s Loic Bade have also been linked with the club.

According to reports from Portugal, Liverpool could face competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid for Carreras. However, Spanish outlet AS claims that Liverpool are currently leading the race for the 21-year-old.
Carreras’ experience in English football, including a season-long loan at Preston North End, is seen as a valuable asset by Liverpool’s decision-makers, who believe it will help ease his adaptation to the Premier League. It’s worth noting that before moving to Benfica in 2024, the player spent four years at Manchester United but never made a senior appearance.
Liverpool Eyeing Andy Robertson Successor
With Carreras recently joining Benfica and tied down until 2029, any suitor, including Liverpool, will have to navigate a long-term contract. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson’s contract expires in 2026, by which time he will be 32.
Given that Kostas Tsimikas (28) is unlikely to be considered the long-term solution, Liverpool are actively assessing their options. Their interest in Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri shows they are already exploring potential left-back replacements.
