Arne Slot may see one of his key players depart at the end of the season. After five successful years at Liverpool, the club is set to allow a player to move on next summer.
Since Slot’s arrival from Feyenoord in July, replacing Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool has thrived, winning nine out of ten matches, with their only loss coming against Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 defeat on September 14. However, Slot faced early challenges, such as the unsuccessful pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who opted to stay in Spain. In response, Ryan Gravenberch has stepped into the midfield role and has impressed.
Another significant setback occurred when first-choice goalkeeper Alisson injured his hamstring during the Reds’ 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on October 5. With backup Caoimhin Kelleher sidelined due to illness, third-choice goalkeeper Vítězslav Jaroš had to step in. Alisson’s injury may keep him out of the upcoming home match against Chelsea, giving Kelleher the opportunity to start.
Kelleher, however, has been the subject of transfer speculation. Nottingham Forest submitted a bid for him in the summer, but Liverpool rejected it. Now, according to Football Insider, the 25-year-old goalkeeper will be allowed to leave next summer. Kelleher, who has made 49 appearances for Liverpool and played a key role in their 2022 Carabao Cup triumph, desires a future as a first-choice keeper.
Despite his potential, Kelleher’s path at Liverpool is blocked, especially with Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili set to join the club in 2025. While Kelleher is under contract until 2026, he has openly expressed his desire to be a No.1 goalkeeper, acknowledging that achieving this at Liverpool might be difficult with Alisson in the squad.
Although praised for his backup role by former Arsenal keeper David Seaman, Kelleher’s ambition is clear: he wants to be a regular starter. If he wants to fulfill that dream, a move away from Anfield may be his best option.
