Jota, 28, lost his life in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, along with his brother, Andre Silva. The incident occurred on Thursday when their vehicle caught fire, subsequently spreading to nearby vegetation, according to the Zamora Provincial Council.

A statement from the council noted, “Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station responded. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”

This tragic news came just two weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. Tributes have poured in from various clubs and notable figures in football, including Porto, Wolves, and Liverpool, who expressed their devastation in a statement: “Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the loss of Diogo Jota. The club requests privacy for Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, and teammates as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher also shared his condolences on X, saying, “Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Thoughts are with their family and friends, especially his wife Rute and their three children.”

In light of Jota’s passing, fans are calling for his shirt number ’20’ to be retired in his honor. One supporter remarked, “Retire his number… no one else should wear 20.
