Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has encountered yet another injury blow as winger Antony suffered a sprained ankle during their 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce.
Antony has faced a challenging season, playing only 27 minutes in the Premier League, which has raised questions about his future under Ten Hag.
His misfortune continued when he was stretchered off late in the Europa League match against the Turkish side, meaning Ten Hag will be without him for the crucial upcoming game against West Ham this weekend.
After being subbed on in the 76th minute, Antony had played just 16 minutes when he fell to the ground with a serious injury, prompting medical staff to attend to him as the final whistle approached in Istanbul.
United later confirmed that Antony had sustained a sprained ankle, stating it was “not as bad as initially feared,” but his return timeline remains unclear.
Ten Hag expressed sympathy for the player following the match, noting how hard Antony had worked in training and that he deserved the opportunity to play against Fenerbahce.
“It’s really unfortunate for him,” he said. “I feel a lot of compassion for him, especially after putting in so much effort in training.
“His performances in training warranted his inclusion. To have to come off so soon is really disappointing. Hopefully, it won’t be too serious; we’ll need to wait 24 hours for a full assessment.”
Antony joined Manchester United from Ajax for £85 million in 2022 but has struggled to meet expectations, making 87 appearances and scoring 12 goals over three seasons.
He has been frequently mentioned as a candidate for an exit from Old Trafford, with speculation linking him to a loan move to Fenerbahce last summer.
Antony now joins Kobbie Mainoo, Jonny Evans, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Harry Maguire on the sidelines as United prepares to face West Ham.
