Jack Grealish looks increasingly likely to leave Manchester City, nearly four years after his club-record £100 million transfer from Aston Villa.
Reports indicate that City have set their asking price for the England international following confirmation he will not be included in the squad for the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States. Grealish, a key figure in the treble-winning 2022/23 campaign, saw his involvement significantly reduced last season, starting just seven Premier League games. Pep Guardiola even publicly apologised for the limited game time the 28-year-old received.
Left out of the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace and missing from the final-day squad against Fulham, Grealish now appears to be on the fringes at the Etihad. His omission from the Club World Cup squad is seen as a strategic move to allow him time to resolve his future.
Despite having two years left on his £300,000-per-week contract, City are reportedly ready to offload their No.10 at a substantial loss. According to The Sun, they would be willing to accept offers in the region of £40 million — £60 million less than they paid in 2021.
Grealish’s representatives are said to be actively exploring new opportunities, with several Premier League clubs reportedly monitoring the situation. A surprising return to Aston Villa has been speculated, while Newcastle, Everton, and West Ham are also believed to be interested.
Interest isn’t limited to England, either. Serie A champions Napoli have reportedly shown interest and could look to pair Grealish with Kevin De Bruyne, who they are expected to sign on a free transfer.
Speaking on Grealish’s situation last month, Guardiola said:
“Of course, Jack has to play. He’s an unbelievable player that has to play football every three days. It didn’t happen this season, or last season either. He needs to do it — whether with us or somewhere else.”
“It’s not personal. I was the one who fought for him to come and stay. What happens next is up to Jack, his agent, and the club.”
Grealish may not be the only major departure this summer. John Stones and Kyle Walker have also been linked with moves away from the Etihad.
Meanwhile, City are already working on reinforcements. Deals for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Wolves left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri are reportedly close to completion.
