Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for a former Liverpool player who left without playing a single Premier League match under Jurgen Klopp.

After securing an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles, City have struggled to maintain their dominant form in the early part of the 2024/25 season. Meanwhile, rivals Liverpool are five points ahead, leading the league under new manager Arne Slot, who took over from Klopp this summer.

Now, City are said to be interested in signing a former Liverpool player overlooked by Klopp, aiming to strengthen their squad.

According to FootballTransfers, Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg, who joined Brentford from Liverpool over the summer in a £25 million deal. Sources reveal that Guardiola first took notice of the 22-year-old during a loan spell at Preston North End while still on Liverpool’s books.

Van den Berg initially caught Guardiola’s eye in a 2021 pre-season friendly and has remained on City’s radar. Despite making four appearances in cup competitions for Liverpool in 2019/20, he was eventually deemed surplus and made available for transfer this summer.

After a loan with Schalke last season, Van den Berg attracted interest from German clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen. However, Brentford ultimately secured his transfer, signing him to a five-year deal.

Since joining Brentford, Van den Berg has made 12 appearances, contributing to their solid start to the season, with 18 points—level with Tottenham and ahead of Manchester United. Sources indicate that any potential move to City likely wouldn’t occur until next summer.
