Dan Ashworth departed Manchester United last week after just five months as the club’s sporting director.
In a swift move, United have already appointed a temporary replacement ahead of the crucial January transfer window. The Daily Mail reports that Jason Wilcox, who joined the club as technical director in April, will step into the role on an interim basis.
Staff were informed of the change via email, which outlined that Wilcox will now oversee all scouting reports and recruitment matters. Additionally, interim director of recruitment Christopher Vivel will take on a more prominent role following Ashworth’s unexpected exit.
United reportedly have no immediate plans to appoint a direct replacement for Ashworth’s role but are considering other executive additions in the future.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Viktoria Plzen, new manager Ruben Amorim commented on Ashworth’s departure, emphasizing its limited impact on the team’s long-term goals. “One person leaving doesn’t change the vision. The vision is clear and remains the same,” Amorim said.
Ashworth had joined United in July after being recruited from Newcastle United, who received compensation for his move to Old Trafford. The club’s official statement described his departure as a “mutual agreement,” thanking him for his contributions during a transitional phase.
