Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, is facing significant pressure. Reports indicate that the club chose to sign Rasmus Hojlund instead of one of Europe’s top strikers.

United’s start to the season has been disappointing, leaving them in 14th place in the Premier League. They are currently on a five-match winless streak, with their last victory being a 7-0 win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup last month.

With the international break underway, new information has surfaced claiming that United opted for Danish striker Hojlund over Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, who has been among Europe’s most prolific scorers. According to ESPN, Watkins was seriously considered, but it was ultimately decided that Hojlund, being seven years younger, offered better value and was a more promising long-term option.

Since joining Old Trafford, Hojlund has scored 17 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions. In contrast, Watkins netted 19 goals in the Premier League last season, helping Villa secure a spot in the Champions League under Unai Emery.

Towards the end of the 2023/24 season, Ten Hag encouraged fans to be patient with Hojlund, noting, “He has had three injuries this season but still managed to score 14 goals. Ten Hag added, “He needs time to develop and progress. There will be ups and downs; he struggled to score his first Premier League goal before winter, but he has a strong character.
