Manchester United has finalized their next four signings following the completion of the £62.5 million transfer of Matheus Cunha.

Manchester United announced their first summer signing on Thursday, confirming the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

On June 1, they revealed they had reached an agreement with their Premier League rivals to sign the Brazilian international, pending visa and registration. The deal is now official, with Cunha signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford, along with an option for an additional year.

Cunha is the club’s first summer signing after United activated his £62.5 million release clause. Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised him as “one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England.” Cunha will bring goals and athleticism to United’s attack, having netted 17 goals across all competitions in the 2024/25 season, including 15 in the Premier League.

Despite this addition, United are eager to further enhance their attack, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo next on their list. Just over a day after announcing Cunha’s signing, they learned Mbeumo favored Old Trafford as his destination. An initial offer of £55 million for him was rejected, but discussions with Brentford are ongoing, and United are hopeful of finalizing the deal before the pre-season training starts in early July.

In addition to pursuing Mbeumo, United are also looking to sign a striker this summer. Liam Delap was their top choice for the No.9 role, but Chelsea secured him instead. Now, they are exploring other options, including Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Victor Osimhen from Napoli. Both players are available, with Gyokeres eager to leave and Napoli willing to sell Osimhen.

United are in urgent need of a proven goalscorer, making either Gyokeres or Osimhen suitable targets. However, after spending on Cunha and potentially on Mbeumo, they may need to offload some players to fund a striker’s addition.

Additionally, United want to strengthen their midfield, especially with Christian Eriksen set to leave when his contract expires. There are also uncertainties surrounding Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro, who is entering the final year of his contract and might be sold following the club’s failure to qualify for European competition next season.

Lastly, United are considering signing a goalkeeper due to uncertainties around Altay Bayindir’s future. Head coach Ruben Amorim seeks a shot-stopper who can compete with Andre Onana for the starting role.
