Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has addressed speculation linking Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres with a move to the Emirates ahead of their Champions League clash.
The Swedish forward has been in phenomenal form since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2021, following an inconsistent spell at Brighton. Gyökeres has netted an impressive 67 goals in 69 appearances, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers. His performances have reportedly caught the attention of top clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, with the latter considering a reunion with former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim.
During his pre-match press conference, Arteta praised Gyökeres’ qualities but refrained from addressing transfer rumors directly.
“I want to focus on the team and the incredible work they’ve done,” Arteta stated. “Sporting is on an amazing run, and they have a lot of individual quality. Especially in that position, they possess some fantastic players.”
This marks the fourth European meeting between Arsenal and Sporting, with their encounters dating back to the 1969/70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. “Champions League football is all about fine margins and capitalizing on key moments,” Arteta said. “We’ve shown we can dominate games, like against Inter, but we must be more clinical to turn performances into results. That’s the next step for us.”
The manager underlined the importance of efficiency and ruthlessness, particularly in high-pressure away games, as Arsenal aims to strengthen their position in Europe’s elite competition.
