Mikel Arteta Shares Heartfelt Message to Aaron Ramsdale Following Emotional Moment After Ex-Arsenal Goalkeeper’s Tears
Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale received a warm welcome from Arsenal supporters, former teammates, and manager Mikel Arteta during his return to the Emirates Stadium with Southampton on Saturday.
After leaving the Gunners for Southampton in a £25 million deal this summer, following the loss of his starting position to David Raya, Ramsdale faced his former club in a Premier League match that saw his new team threaten to create an upset.
Ramsdale made several key saves, but it was Cameron Archer who put Southampton ahead in the 55th minute on a counter-attack. Just three minutes later, Kai Havertz equalized for Arsenal with a shot that hit the inside of the post, and Bukayo Saka assisted Gabriel Martinelli to give Arsenal the lead.
An error by Yukinari Sugawara allowed Saka to secure a 3-1 victory for Arsenal, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season. Despite conceding three goals, Ramsdale performed well and managed to control his emotions during the game.
However, the warm reception from Arsenal fans during the warm-up moved him to tears. In injury time, supporters chanted his name, and after the match, Ramsdale had a moment with Raya, Arsenal goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana Pavon, and Arteta.
In his post-match press conference, Arteta expressed his best wishes to Ramsdale, congratulating him on Southampton’s performance. “I wished him all the best and congratulated him for the way that they played. I hope they continue to do well, especially for the manager and Aaron, as they are a really good side.”
Ramsdale left Arsenal with Arteta’s support in August, as Raya had become the established first-choice keeper. During his three years at Arsenal, he made 89 appearances and praised the club’s handling of his departure.
“What he did for me during my time at Arsenal, I can only thank him for, and he thanked me for my contributions when I left,” Ramsdale told talkSPORT recently. “As a football club, we achieved getting back into the Champions League and pushing for trophies.
“Ultimately, top managers have to make decisions that may upset people. He made that decision, and we still speak. I’m looking forward to getting more games under my belt here, especially since we have Arsenal in a few weeks, which will be a nice return.”
Ramsdale chose to leave the chance of winning trophies for a battle against relegation, stating, “If I was sitting on the bench, winning a trophy wouldn’t have meant much to me. I just wanted to play football. As a kid, I wanted to be on the pitch, not just sitting on the bench. I’m fortunate to have found a place at Southampton.”
