Mikel Arteta outlines his intentions for Kai Havertz following Arsenal’s signing of Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz can feature together after both scored in a 3-0 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao.

Arteta handed £64m signing Gyokeres his first start, and the Swedish striker marked the occasion with a well-taken header into the far corner. Havertz, returning from an injury-hit 2024-25 season, came off the bench in the 71st minute to net Arsenal’s third after being played through by Bukayo Saka.

With Arsenal also investing heavily in Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke, Havertz faces strong competition for his place, while Gyokeres is tipped to boost the club’s trophy hopes after an extraordinary 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting Lisbon last season.

Following a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal in their previous outing, Arteta praised the team’s improved display against Champions League opposition, highlighting both scorers’ contributions and the importance of “raising the level” across the squad. He noted the significance of Gyokeres’ first goal, the developing connections with new signings, and Havertz’s composed finish, stressing that the team will need their very best from everyone to succeed.
