Mohammed Kudus has conceded that Tottenham Hotspur fell short in two key areas during their clash with Bournemouth, with the winger accepting responsibility for one of them.
Spirits were high going into Saturday’s match, as Spurs had started the Premier League season with back-to-back victories and had just unveiled new signing Xavi Simons, who received a huge reception from the home crowd before kick-off.
Despite the lively atmosphere, Bournemouth quickly quietened the Tottenham fans and took control of the game. The visitors could have left with a more convincing win had they been more clinical in front of goal, while Spurs struggled to cope with their intensity.
Kudus admits Spurs’ attackers were not at their best
After the game, Thomas Frank pointed out that Tottenham had issues with second balls and were unprepared for Bournemouth’s direct style of play. Kudus echoed those thoughts, admitting that the team failed to deal with the Cherries’ approach and that the forwards, himself included, underperformed.
Speaking to Spurs’ official channel, Kudus said:
“We knew they would be tough, with lots of balls in behind and battles for second balls. The game was more about duels and challenges, and we expected them to come at us that way.
“As forwards, I don’t think we created enough – including myself. We should have done more in attack and made more chances. But we learn from these games and move on after the international break.”
Reality check or warning sign for Spurs?
This display might serve as a timely reality check for Thomas Frank, highlighting the limitations of a midfield built largely on hard work rather than creativity. On the other hand, it was one of Spurs’ poorest home performances in recent memory, with just a single shot on target across 90 minutes.
At Brentford, Frank may have been afforded patience after such showings, but at Tottenham, the expectations are far higher.
