Paul Merson has issued a warning to Liverpool ahead of their Champions League showdown against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
The Reds return to European action with a crucial round-of-16 clash against the French champions, who, like Arne Slot’s side, hold a commanding 13-point lead at the top of their domestic league. Former PSG and Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho believes the tie is too close to call.

In his latest Sky Sports column, Merson stressed that Liverpool cannot afford to lose at the Parc des Princes, warning that Luis Enrique’s team is in top form. However, he suggested that if the Reds can secure a positive result, they will have the advantage heading into the return leg at Anfield.
“I don’t see Liverpool winning in Paris—they have to come back with at least a draw,” Merson wrote. “This is the kind of tie where one of these teams could end it in 45 minutes if the other has an off day. Both sides can tear opponents apart.
“We saw PSG do it against Man City with four second-half goals, and we’ve seen Liverpool dismantle teams too. PSG aren’t just a team of superstars anymore; they’ve changed direction, and it’s working for them.
“But they can’t afford to lose the first leg because the return fixture at Anfield will be a completely different challenge.”
Liverpool Face a Tough Test but Have Nothing to Fear
Both sides head into this matchup in exceptional domestic form, making for a fascinating contest over the next eight days.
As Merson notes, PSG have adapted well this season despite Kylian Mbappé’s impending departure, moving away from their star-studded approach in favor of a more cohesive unit. Their 4-2 victory over Manchester City in January showcased their attacking firepower, though they also fell 2-0 behind in that game—something Liverpool would be far less likely to allow.
PSG arrive on the back of 10 consecutive wins, but none against a team of Liverpool’s caliber. Meanwhile, Slot’s squad should be well-rested after a weekend off due to their early FA Cup exit.
A draw in Paris would give Liverpool a solid foundation to finish the job at Anfield next week. However, if the Reds show the same clinical edge they displayed against Man City and Newcastle, they are more than capable of leaving the French capital with a victory.
