Police Step In After Fans Take Inappropriate Photos at Diogo Jota and Andre Silva’s Gravesite

Police were called to intervene at Diogo Jota’s gravesite after members of the public began taking photos just hours after the former Liverpool star and his brother were laid to rest. The burial took place at a church in Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto, where a large crowd had gathered to mourn.

Jota, 28, tragically died in the early hours of Thursday morning alongside his brother, Andre Silva, in a fatal car crash in Zamora, Spain. Their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle, and both were declared dead at the scene. On Saturday morning, an emotional funeral service was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar Catholic Church, with numerous figures from the football community – including Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and several Portuguese players – in attendance.

A private wake was held the day before, attended by Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso – whom he had recently married – and close family members. The funeral service itself was conducted respectfully, according to The Mirror, with the cemetery closed during the proceedings to allow mourners privacy. However, after the graveyard reopened to the public, several people were seen taking selfies and photos at the gravesite, prompting police to intervene and disperse the crowd.

Only close family and friends were permitted inside the church during the service, which was streamed live to the thousands of fans gathered outside. Bishop D. Manuel Linda of Porto led the ceremony and shared a heartfelt message directed at Jota’s three young children, who were not present:
“Seeing a child cry is harder than seeing an adult cry. The pain felt by your mother and grandparents is unimaginable. Witnessing the remains of one child is painful, but two is beyond words.”
He continued, “But feelings speak when words fail. We are with you in spirit. Crying is human – and not crying would be the real tragedy.”

While most mourners acted with respect, police were forced to respond after some individuals crowded around the grave, kneeling and taking photos of the headstones. This behavior stood in contrast to the otherwise solemn and respectful atmosphere.

Though many of Jota’s former teammates were present, Cristiano Ronaldo chose not to attend, reportedly to avoid drawing attention away from the grieving families and the importance of the moment.
