Liverpool have completed the permanent sale of academy product Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that could reach £35 million—and it includes a key clause that could influence the club’s future defensive setup.

The 22-year-old centre-back, who joined Liverpool at the age of five and made 58 senior appearances, leaves just months after helping the club win the Premier League title under new manager Arne Slot.

As reported by liverpoolfc.com, Quansah has officially joined the Bundesliga side after featuring 25 times last season, including 13 Premier League games during Liverpool’s title-winning run.

In terms of finances, Liverpool will receive an upfront payment of £30 million, with an additional £5 million available through performance-based add-ons.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the deal also includes a buy-back clause, allowing Liverpool to re-sign Quansah from 2027 for a starting fee of €60 million plus add-ons—a clear indication the club hasn’t entirely ruled out a future return.

This type of clause mirrors the strategy Liverpool are reportedly considering for Harvey Elliott, highlighting the belief they still hold in these young talents who are only moving on due to strong competition in the current squad.

Quansah is a true product of Liverpool’s youth system. The Warrington-born defender played a significant role during both Jurgen Klopp’s final season and Arne Slot’s first, including in the Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea. He also found the net in matches against Union SG, Aston Villa, and Wolves.

With Ibrahima Konaté ahead of him and the club eyeing Marc Guehi as a potential defensive addition, Quansah’s departure helps free up both space and funds.

His transfer follows Caoimhin Kelleher’s switch to Brentford, another move partly influenced by Liverpool’s record £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen.

Quansah leaves as a Premier League champion and another successful graduate from the Academy who made his mark before moving on. The club wishes him well—and with that buy-back clause in place, there’s a chance he could one day return to Anfield.
