Real Madrid suffered a heavy defeat against Barcelona on Saturday night.
Following this loss, the club issued an official statement denouncing fan behavior in light of the incident during the match.
In the first El Clasico of the 2024/25 La Liga season, Los Blancos hosted their rivals at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Barcelona, led by Hansi Flick, showcased their prowess with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice, along with goals from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, resulting in a convincing 4-0 victory.
After the game, a video surfaced on social media showing fans allegedly directing racist and xenophobic slurs at 17-year-old Barcelona player Yamal, who netted the third goal.
On their official website, Real Madrid stated: “Real Madrid firmly condemns any form of behavior involving racism, xenophobia, or violence in football and sports. We deeply regret the insults uttered by a few fans in one corner of the stadium last night.
“Real Madrid has initiated an investigation to locate and identify the individuals responsible for these regrettable and disgraceful remarks, in order to implement the necessary disciplinary and legal actions.”
In his post-match comments, Yamal remarked: “When we were at the top of the league, people said we were only beating mid-table teams, but now that we faced Madrid, we showed what we can do. Beating one of the best teams in the world 4-0 proves we’re ready for anything.”
He continued: “I was determined to score today since I hadn’t found the net in a while. Hearing our fans more than the opponents in their stadium is incredible. Winning El Clasico is significant, but it’s just three points, and now we must focus on our upcoming match against Espanyol next Sunday.”
With this impressive win at the Bernabeu, Barcelona has widened their lead at the top of the La Liga standings to six points.
