Liverpool may face another significant free transfer setback in 2026, according to a recent update from France.

Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato reports that Ibou Konate has expressed a desire for a “change of scenery” next summer, indicating he plans to leave Anfield when his contract expires in a year.

While discussions about an extension have occurred, no agreement has been reached, as Konate reportedly seeks a 40% pay increase.

The club is concerned about a scenario similar to the one that saw Trent Alexander-Arnold join Real Madrid just before his contract ended, and those concerns are now materializing.

Konate, who has established himself as a regular starter alongside Virgil van Dijk, is looking for a “new challenge” after five seasons at Liverpool. He played a pivotal role in the club’s 2024/25 Premier League title win.

Top European clubs are showing interest, with Real Madrid, PSG, and Barcelona among the suitors. Reports suggest Real Madrid is Konate’s preferred choice, although a return to Paris with PSG could also attract him.

As a fan favorite and a key player for both club and country, losing the 6ft 4in defender would be significant, especially considering his age and potential.

This situation echoes Liverpool’s recent experience with Alexander-Arnold, who was sold to Madrid for £10m. Losing another key defender for free would be hard to accept.

The report indicates that Konate has already been offered to several clubs in anticipation of a 2026 exit. It remains uncertain if Liverpool would consider selling him this summer to avoid a free departure, prompting potential internal discussions.

His prominence in the France national team, where he has been described as a “leader,” will likely heighten interest across Europe.

Should Konate leave, Liverpool may need to act quickly in the transfer market, with Marc Guehi being frequently linked as a potential long-term defensive solution.
